He Opened the Text—and Regretted It Instantly
Ryan was about to go to sleep when his phone buzzed.
Unknown Number.
He almost ignored it. Instead, curiosity won.
The message was short:
“I know what you did.”
Ryan frowned. It had to be a joke.
“Wrong number,” he replied.
A few seconds later, another message appeared.
“No, Ryan. Definitely not the wrong number.”
His heart skipped a beat.
Whoever this was knew his name.
Ryan sat up in bed. His apartment suddenly felt too quiet. He stared at the screen, waiting for another text.
It arrived.
“You should have left it alone.”
A cold feeling spread through his chest.
Three weeks earlier, Ryan had found a black flash drive in the parking lot outside his office. He had plugged it into his laptop, hoping to identify the owner.
Instead, he discovered hundreds of files.
Photos.
Financial records.
Private conversations.
Information that clearly didn’t belong to him.
The next morning, the flash drive had mysteriously disappeared from his desk.
Ryan never told anyone.
Now someone knew.
“Who is this?” he typed.
The answer came instantly.
“Someone trying to help you.”
Ryan’s hands trembled.
Another message followed.
“Look outside.”
Slowly, he walked to the window.
A black car was parked across the street.
Its headlights were off.
Someone was sitting inside.
Watching.
Ryan stepped back immediately.
His phone buzzed again.
“They know you opened the files.”
“Who knows?”
No response.
Instead, a picture appeared.
It was a photo of Ryan standing at his office building earlier that day.
Taken from a distance.
Someone had been following him.
Panic hit him like a wave.
Then the final message arrived.
“You have one hour to leave the city.”
“If you stay, they’ll come for the flash drive.”
Ryan stared at the screen.
The problem was simple.
He no longer had it.
The black car’s engine suddenly started.
Its headlights flicked on.
Ryan watched in horror as it slowly pulled away from the curb.
Then his phone buzzed one last time.
“Too late.”
At that exact moment, someone knocked on his apartment door.
Three slow knocks.
Then silence.
Ryan froze.
Another knock echoed through the room.
Whoever was outside already knew he was home.
And they weren’t leaving.
