The Call He Never Should Have Answered
At exactly 2:17 a.m., Ethan’s phone rang.
He stared at the screen, confused. The number was completely unknown. No name. No country code he recognized. For a moment, he almost ignored it. But something made him answer.
“Hello?”
Silence.
Then a shaky whisper came through the speaker.
“Don’t let them find me.”
Before Ethan could ask who it was, the line went dead.
He sat frozen in bed, convinced it was just a prank. But seconds later, another notification appeared. A text from the same number.
“They know I called you.”
His heart pounded.
He typed back, Who are you?
No reply.
The next morning, Ethan tried calling the number again. It no longer existed. Every attempt ended with the same message: This number is unavailable.
Trying to forget about it, he left for work. But things started getting strange.
A black SUV was parked across the street from his apartment. It remained there for hours. When he walked past it, the driver looked straight at him but never moved.
That night, another message arrived.
“Check your front door.”
Ethan slowly opened it.
A small envelope lay on the welcome mat.
Inside was a single photograph.
It showed Ethan… sleeping in his own bedroom.
The picture had clearly been taken through his window.
Fear replaced every logical explanation.
He rushed to the police, but without a sender, fingerprints, or security footage, there was little they could do. They suggested someone was playing a cruel joke.
But Ethan knew this wasn’t a joke.
The following evening, his phone rang again.
The same unknown number.
Against his better judgment, he answered.
The whisper returned.
“They’re listening. Don’t trust anyone.”
Then he heard footsteps.
Heavy breathing.
A scream.
The call disconnected.
Suddenly, someone knocked on his apartment door.
Three slow knocks.
Ethan looked through the peephole.
No one.
When he opened the door, another envelope waited outside.
This one contained a map with one location circled in red.
At the bottom, someone had written:
“Come alone.”
Every instinct told him to stay away.
Instead, curiosity won.
The address led to an abandoned warehouse outside the city.
Dust covered the floor. Broken windows let in cold moonlight.
In the center of the room sat an old phone.
It began ringing the moment Ethan stepped closer.
Hands shaking, he answered.
The familiar voice whispered one final sentence.
“Turn around.”
Ethan spun instantly.
No one.
Only silence.
Then he noticed fresh footprints leading toward a hidden door at the back of the warehouse.
As he pushed it open, he discovered dozens of photographs covering the walls.
Every single one was of him.
Sleeping.
Working.
Shopping.
Even sitting alone in coffee shops.
Someone had been watching him for months.
Pinned in the center of the wall was one final note.
“You answered… exactly like we knew you would.”
The lights suddenly went out.
His phone buzzed one last time.
A message appeared.
“Thank you for proving the experiment worked.”
After that night, Ethan disappeared without a trace.
His apartment was found untouched.
His wallet, keys, and phone were still inside.
But every call log from that mysterious number had vanished.
As if the call he never should have answered had never existed at all.
