The Last Seen That Exposed the Truth

Sarah never paid much attention to WhatsApp’s “Last Seen” feature.

To her, it was just a tiny timestamp beneath a name. Nothing important. Nothing worth worrying about.

That changed on a rainy Thursday night.

Her fiancé, Daniel, had told her he was exhausted from work and was going to bed early.

“Goodnight, love,” he texted at 10:07 PM.

Sarah smiled and put her phone away.

An hour later, she couldn’t sleep. She picked up her phone and opened WhatsApp.

Daniel’s profile appeared at the top of her chat list.

Last Seen Today at 11:14 PM.

She frowned.

Maybe he woke up for a moment, she thought.

The next night, it happened again.

Daniel said he was asleep by ten.

His Last Seen showed 12:03 AM.

Then again.

And again.

Soon, Sarah noticed a pattern.

Every night, after telling her he was sleeping, Daniel remained active for hours.

Her friends urged her not to overthink it.

“It’s probably nothing,” they said.

But doubt had already entered her mind.

One evening, curiosity got the better of her.

At exactly 11:30 PM, she checked his Last Seen.

Online.

A few seconds later, offline.

Then online again.

He wasn’t sleeping.

He was talking to someone.

Sarah’s heart sank.

For days she battled between trust and suspicion.

Finally, she decided to confront him.

The following weekend, they met at a small café.

Daniel smiled as he arrived.

“You look serious,” he said.

“I need to ask you something.”

His smile faded.

“Who are you talking to every night?”

Daniel blinked.

“What?”

“You tell me you’re asleep. But your Last Seen says otherwise.”

For a long moment, he said nothing.

Then he looked down.

Sarah felt her chest tighten.

The silence felt like a confession.

Finally, Daniel spoke.

“You’re right.”

Her stomach dropped.

“There is someone I’ve been talking to.”

The words hit her like a punch.

She stared at him.

Daniel reached into his backpack and placed a folder on the table.

Inside were documents, sketches, and receipts.

Sarah looked up in confusion.

“What is this?”

Daniel took a deep breath.

“For six months, I’ve been working with your brother.”

“My brother?”

“I’ve been planning something.”

He opened the folder to reveal designs for a small bookstore.

Sarah’s dream bookstore.

The one she had talked about for years.

“I wanted to surprise you after the wedding,” he said softly. “Every night I was messaging contractors, designers, and your brother. That’s why I stayed online.”

Sarah couldn’t speak.

Tears filled her eyes.

“All this time,” she whispered.

“I knew it would look suspicious if you checked,” Daniel admitted. “But I wanted the surprise to be perfect.”

Sarah laughed through her tears.

For weeks she had imagined betrayal.

The truth was something entirely different.

As they left the café hand in hand, Sarah glanced at her phone.

A tiny timestamp.

A simple Last Seen.

It had almost convinced her she knew the whole story.

But the truth, she realized, is often much bigger than what a screen can show.
