What He Sent by Accident Changed Everything
Ethan never meant to send the message.
It was nearly midnight when he sat alone in his apartment, staring at his phone. After weeks of overthinking, he had finally typed the words he had been afraid to say.
“I can’t keep pretending you’re just a friend. Every time I see you, I want more.”
The message was meant for Olivia.
His best friend.
The woman who had unknowingly occupied his thoughts for the last three years.
His thumb hovered over the screen as doubt crept in. What if she didn’t feel the same way? What if he ruined the friendship forever?
Before he could decide, his phone slipped from his hand and landed on the couch.
A second later, he heard the sound.

His heart stopped.
For several seconds, he couldn’t breathe.
The message was gone, flying through cyberspace toward Olivia’s phone.
Panic took over.
He grabbed his device and tried to delete it, but it was too late.
The dreaded double check marks had already appeared.
She had received it.
Ethan spent the next hour pacing around his apartment, imagining every possible outcome.
Then his phone buzzed.
One new message.
From Olivia.
His hands shook as he opened it.
“Can I come over?”
That was all it said.
Nothing more.
Nothing less.
Twenty minutes later, a knock echoed through the apartment.
Ethan opened the door.
Olivia stood there wearing a black jacket, her hair slightly messy from the wind. Her expression was impossible to read.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
The silence felt endless.
Finally, she looked up.
“Did you mean it?”
The question hit him harder than anything else.
There was no hiding now.
“No,” he started, then laughed nervously. “Actually… yes. Every word.”
Olivia stared at him.
Then she smiled.
A real smile.
The kind he hadn’t seen in weeks.
“You have any idea how long I’ve been waiting to hear that?”
Ethan blinked.
“What?”
She shook her head and laughed.
“For two years, Ethan.”
His mind struggled to process what she had just said.

Olivia stepped closer.
“Honestly, if you hadn’t accidentally sent that message, I probably never would have said anything either.”
